The Unexpected Gift – A Heroes Journey of Overcoming Pain

Book Category: Self-Help
The Unexpected Gift was an unexpected pleasant book for me. It’s a true hero’s journey story of Barbara’s seemingly happy marriage’s ending and what she did to overcome the pain and confusion of betrayal.
At first, I honestly couldn’t connect with her story, but as I read and dug into the core of her message, searching for the gems she was laying out for me, I finally connected on an emotional level. I believe that no matter what background you come from, whether you’re a man or a woman, married, divorced, or single, a teacher or an engineer if you interpret Barbra’s story, not as a story of divorce, but as a story of how you can overcome extreme emotional pain, then your money and time invested in her book is worthy.
What’s great about The Unexpected Gift
To make the book even better, which I’m thankful for as an avid reader of nonfiction books, Barbra clearly lays out the 7 Steps to Reach Your Gift in Appendix A. Essentially, these 7 Steps are the core messages she hid throughout her story. The addition of the 7 Steps ties the whole idea of her hero’s journey together so well. So make sure you do not skip reading the appendix.
Here’s a peek at what the 7 Steps are:
1: Awakening and owning your story
2: Building radical relationships
3: Finding clarity of mind
4: Enlisting the body
5: Partnering with mentors
6: Forwarding the future
7: Paying it forward
As I’ve finished this book I feel sad it’s over. The book will leave you with a happy feeling and a sense of hope for your present and future self. I recommend it mainly to people who have suffered trauma but can easily be beneficial for everyone.
