Book Category: Nonfiction, Self-Help
The Power of Now means to live in the now. It’s a must-read book for everyone.
Calling all of the human race. The Power of Now is an eye-opening and meticulous yet short read meant for every human being on this planet. I recommend for people from all walks of life to read this book. By reading this book you can learn to live in the Now. The Now is the only moment there ever is.
People from all walks of life have read The Power of Now coming out a better person at the end of the book. I know many aspects of my life have become better especially in my personal life. My relationship with my wife and daughter have improved a great deal due to my presence after finishing this book. I’m more aware of what’s going on around and within me because of living in the Now. One of the major purposes of this book is to help people live in the Now since Now is truly the only thing there is.
Before reading you should be aware of a few things about the book. In this review of The Power of Now I will cover over:
- I’ll give you a few highlights, best quotes, and the main messages the book has to offer. The main messages are simple yet are packed full of takeaways so I’ll only give you the best.
- I’ll include my personal experiences thus far with experiencing the teachings from this book.
- Be wary of your own misguided interpretation of this book. Here I’ll warn you about what I think you should avoid doing or not doing after reading the book.
1. Live in the Now – Some Main Points
Point 1. Are you afraid of the word spirituality? Are you religious? When reading The Power of Now I recommend loosening your grip on your religious beliefs. This is not a religious book, however, it uses religion as an example and states this straight up front. Eckheart Tolle does not deny religion or God. You can still practice your religion as well as the teachings in this book and not be breaking any of your religious views.
Point 2. Sometimes we get way too absorbed in the meaning of words. Taking, for example, the word God. When you think of the word God what do you picture? A man? You might picture something different depending on your religion or nothing at all. No one truly knows, so it’s better not to place a worldly image on God. You may still believe in your own religion but be wary of any words you use to describe the Creator of All.
Point 3. ‘The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive. To put it more accurately, it is not so much that you use your mind wrongly–you usually don’t use it at all. It uses you. This is the disease…’
‘The beginning of freedom is the realization that you are not the possessing entity–the thinker. Knowing this enables you to observe the entity. The moment you start watching the thinker, a higher level of consciousness becomes activated. You then begin to realize that there is a vast realm of intelligence beyond thought, that thought is only a tiny aspect of that intelligence. Another thing you realize is that all the things that truly matter–beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace–arise from beyond the mind. You begin to awaken.
is one of the major takeaways from this book. To live in the Now means to be fully present. That means you feel every movement and sense every change in your environment, body, and mind. Everything basically becomes one. The concept is very hard to explain, in fact, words don’t really do justice. You must feel the Now for yourself in order to know what being present actually feels like.
And whether you openly accept this or not everyone hears voices in their head. Sometimes the voice in our head is overpowering and constant. This is the mind controlling us. What Tolle teaches us to do is to listen to our voice impartially. Do not judge, just listen to it. After listening to it for a while you’ll hear patterns and repetition. Don’t acknowledge the voice. Just listen. Soon you’ll realize you are separate from the thought, therefore, you have control over your own body and mind. This power comes from beyond the physical world.
Although words don’t really do the feeling of living in the now very well, Tolle does a good job of explaining as best he can. Most importantly he says you cannot try to understand living in the Now, you must feel it and accept it. Just Be in the present moment.
What about the Past and Future?
The more you honor and accept the Now, the more you are free of pain, of suffering and free of the egoic mind. Click To Tweet
Point 4. You all have your schedules to stick to and deadlines to meet. The Power of Now does not deny this. What it does do is emphasize that Now is the only time there is. At one time the past it was Now and at one time the Future will be Now. You cannot go in the past to change things because it’s already gone and you cannot go into the future either. The only ‘time’ you can change anything is Now. If you can accept this fact you will be much more productive in your life because your main focus will be at this moment.
What about planning for the future?
Point 5. It’s actually fine to plan for the future. In fact, we need to know where our life is going and what we want to accomplish but the only way to ever accomplish anything is if you do it Now. That’s one of the best things I like about this book is the emphasis to live in the Now.
Make your goals and do them immediately. There’s no sense in sitting around waiting for the right time since the only time is Now.
There’s no pain if you live in the now.
Point 6. Think about it, have you ever had a painful experience. Maybe your partner cheated on you, or remember the time when your grandma passed away? These experiences happen to everyone. At the time they happen it is painful, there’s no doubt about that, but after that moment in time is passed there’s no real point in holding on to that pain. Tolle is not suggesting for you to be a soulless human being who doesn’t react to anything at all. What he is suggesting is for you to let go of your painful past because, after all, it is the Past. You only live in this moment and if you’re able to fully accept that your life will be extremely happy.
Switching subjects just a bit, have you ever lost your temper at something so small when you look back at it and say to yourself that it was such a stupid thing to get angry over? That’s happened to all of us at least a dozen times in our life. But it doesn’t need to be like that. Anger is a terrible emotion which makes us feel sick inside. The solution to anger and all forms of unpleasant emotions is to live in the Now.
You have complete control over all of yourself when you take a step back and you feel the Being all around you and within you. The book goes into depth about what it calls the pain-body and how to defeat losing control of yourself. I recommend studying this book in depth if you want to learn more about this topic.
What do I do if I’m stuck in a terrible situation which is impossible to get out of?
Sometimes we find ourselves stuck in situations which hurt so badly. The most common one might be an abusive marriage. The book suggests if you find yourself in a situation like this you need to step away in order to live fully in the Now. By stepping away I mean completely. A harmful situation like the one I mentioned above will only continue harming you. Search deep down inside of yourself to find the best course of action then take it to get away from harmful situations such as these.
2. Live in the Now – My Personal Experiences After Reading The Power of Now
Point 7. I’m extremely grateful for the lessons in this book. Not that my life was messed up in any way. My family and I are completely happy with each other. The only thing which was bothering my family and I was the fact that I was spending so much time ‘working’ even when I was not working. What I mean by that is when it was supposed to be time for the family my mind was still in another place and time. My mind was racing with thoughts of how I can improve my business rather than living in the Now during the most precious moments any father and husband can have with his family.
What this book taught me to do is to separate my working time with family time by appreciating every moment in the Now. So when I’m with my family my Presence is only with them, not somewhere else. Being Present is one of the most important aspects I learned from reading The Power of Now and it is the thing every human being on planet Earth should be doing.
Point 8. You’ll love this point. Have you ever found yourself having to reread lines or even paragraphs in a book because you completely forgot what you just read? This used to happen to me before I discovered what it’s like to live in the Now. Whenever I sit down to read now I only focus on the words and meaning in the book. I don’t let my mind wander to think about other things. When you are Present you won’t have that problem.
I also recommend reading The Power of Habit which can also help by focusing your mind on tasks which need your full attention.
Procrastination Does Not Live in the Now
Point 9. When a problem presents itself to you what do you do? Do you immediately take care of it as soon as you are able to or do you wait until the last minute? I’d say over half of the people reading this if not more, procrastinate until the last moment. I was one of those procrastinators once in my life. Sometimes the procrastination bug still bites me once in a while mainly when I get too stressed or tired which are just two of the almost endless reasons for procrastination.
By living in the Now you will have no reason to wait until tomorrow to get a needed task done. When something comes up and you are not preoccupied with a previous engagement then just take care of what you need to take care of. It is as simple as that. The task itself may not be an easy one but the process of starting is no problem at all when you are completely Present.
3. Live in the Now – Be wary of your own misguided interpretation of this book.
Everything in life is open to interpretation, however, I warn you, that if you leave one of the lessons taught in The Power of Now you might be endangering your productivity or something worse. I’ve seen first hand how this book affected my older brother who now lives ‘secluded’ from the rest of the world in a mobile tent. I can’t tell you all the reasons why he chooses to live like that because I don’t know every reason. I can tell you what might have led him to his current situation.
He so badly wanted to live going with the flow, peacefully in his own world and not have to worry about paying rent or anything else that might make him feel upset. In his mind, he felt that if he lives in a city his own way of peaceful life would be destroyed. He didn’t have much money or a steady job which also meant he couldn’t own a house of his own either. So he has cut himself out almost completely from the modern world.
There may be many other reasons for how he has chosen to live his life cut off which is completely his right to choose but also his own fault for putting himself in a poor condition. The one major lesson my brother forgot to implement in his life is to take care of problems immediately after they occur. Your responsibilities as brothers/sisters, sons/daughters, fathers/mothers and husbands/wives are extremely important don’t you think? You must not forget to follow through with taking care of your most important responsibility. You have the choice most if not all of the time to put yourself in the best possible situations and always stay positive no matter what the situation is.
The Power of Now is a book I will recommend over and over again especially to people who have many issues in their lives. The book suggests that the lessons in it can change the world, however, reading this book alone is not the only solution. In my opinion, if you really want to change your own life and the world I advise you to read a wide range of self-development, business, and nonfiction books. Reading consistently will change your life for the better just as it has for me.
I have started a self-development movement because of my passion for books and the effect they’ve had on my life. My personal growth has been increasing at a drastic rate and that’s exactly what I want for you too. I want for us to make the world a smarter place which in turn will make it a better and more peaceful place too. I strongly believe in my cause and would love it if you believe in it too.
Join me in our cause!
